 The Books Issue

NOVEMBER 2018
For some reason, I woke up this morning freaking out about how much we would lose with the people who were going to die today — their knowledge, experience, intelligence, and character. Some of it isn't that interesting, like how to unclog the coffee maker that their kids are going to throw away anyway, but what about everything else? Their oceanography expertise, their best pie crust recipe, what they know about stamps, their skill in throwing a boomerang, their comic genius... How is that knowledge preserved? How will it be shared? And then I thought,
this is why books are so important.
This issue is dedicated to books and the preservation of knowledge.

Book Reviews – Nonfiction

Because I have read widely about women and leadership, gender issues, language, communication and soft skills, I started to keep notes about what I was finding. After many years, I have decided to share those reviews on my website. I hope that they are helpful. New books include: "Simplify Work," "Speak with Impact," and "Take the Work out of Networking."

Book Reviews – Fiction
Since I'm gym rat and race through audiobooks, here are a bunch of fiction reviews. In case you didn't already know, Tana French is the queen of Irish literary crime fiction. Richard Price rules. The Goldfinch was a masterpiece. And Alice Munro is the best short story writer in the world. Not that I'm opinionated or anything.

Books are a uniquely portable magic.
                                            ~ Stephen King
You don't have to burn books to destroy a culture.
Just get people to stop reading them.
                                              ~ Ray Bradbury

PRO TIP:
Despite the many dumb business books that are published each year, it's worth keeping up with the literature on the off chance that you encounter a well-written and useful book.

Can't We Talk About Something More Pleasant?
by Roz Chast
Yes, it’s a humorous cartoon book, but Roz so touchingly explains the experience of a child who watches her parents age, it feels like the most intimate memoir ever. Extraordinary.
